Moxidectin is an anthelmintic drug which kills parasitic worms (helminths), and is used for the prevention and control of heartworm and intestinal worms. Moxidectin is a semisynthetic derivative of nemadectin which is produced by fermentation by Streptomyces cyano-griseus. This Streptomyces species was discovered in a soil sample from Australia in the late 1980s collected by an agronomist working for the American Cyanamid company.
Moxidectin (Milbemycin B) is a potent, broad-spectrum endectocide with activity against a wide range of nematodes, insects and acari.
In vivo:
In human, MOX is generally safe and well tolerated, with a slightly higher incidence of transient, mild, and moderate central nervous system AEs as the dose increased. The PKs of MOX are dose proportional within the dose range studied, and the elimination half-life (t1/2 elim) is long (mean: 20.2-35.1 days).
